winklepedia's description of Jump
Jump is a village in the Metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire England.
According to local legend, Jump village was named Jump after a small river that ran through the village and the local coal miners having to 'jump' over the river to gain access.
Jump has a small selection of pubs and a working mens club
• The Flying Dutchman
• The Coach And Horses
• The Wellington Inn
Also, the village hosts a traditional Fish and Chip shop, a butchers, a hairdressers, a convenience store and a post office. Recently opening in the village is a sure start nursery school, which is in the centre of the village. The village also has a local school for young children, Jump Primary school.
THE EARLY YEARS
Jump pit was opened by the Earl of Fitzwilliam in September 1816 and it worked the Barnsley Bed seam. The pit stayed in production for 40 odd years before closing in 1858.
From around 1850 the Dawes family who owned iron works in nearby Elsecar and Milton were responsible for the rapid development of the village of jump, and miners, ironworkers and other tradesmen connected to the industries filled the new houses that were built.
Mr Dawes was also responsible for the building of the Chapel and Church school rooms.
Pub’s were also built and by 1860 the Flying Dutchman, Duke of Cambridge, the Wellington and a pub called Red White and Blues were all selling beer in the village.
In 1880 St Georges church was opened and this also was largely paid for by the Dawes family.
By 1891 Barnsley co-op society had opened a branch in the village and by the 1900’s the village was indeed well and truly on the map.
In Fact, in 1901 some residents of the village were less than happy. And, in a bid to rid the village of it’s rough and tumble image tried to change the name to Woodlands.
This was much to the disgust of the majority of jump folk and the idea was booted out without debate. And so the name remains today.
If Carlsberg made villages they probably would have made this one.
It's the best village in the World!
